Turkey does not want to join EU after Brexit vote - media

Turkey could turn its back on their 54-year campaign to join the EU after Brexit exposed the weakness of the disintegrating union, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's chief adviser Ilnur Cevik said.

The EU has promised Turkey EU membership for decades, and has recently offered to fast-track the Islamic republic's application in a bid to convince president Erdogan regime to keep three million migrants from travelling to Europe, Express writes.

Cevik has claimed the Turkish government are having second thoughts about joining the bloc following Brexit.

Asked if Turkey was concerned their bid to become an EU member state was fading into the distance, Cevik said: “Not really, because we are not sure where the EU is going anyway. We’re trying to get into the EU while you guys are trying to get out".

"The irony is we have been pushing and pushing and they haven’t accepted us. For the past 54 years we have been at the doorstep being treated like beggars and our people are very unhappy about that," he added.
