Turkey records highest daily COVID-19 death toll

Turkey on Monday reported 19,103 more COVID-19 infections and 254 new fatalities, the highest daily figure so far, over the past 24 hours, according to the Turkish Health Ministry data.

The new cases include 3,412 symptomatic patients and the total number of infections exceeded 2 million.

As many as 34,419 people also recovered in the past day, bringing the tally to 1,835,705, while the death toll climbed to 18,351.

An additional 196,110 COVID-19 tests were conducted across the country, pushing the total to over 22.63 million.

The number of patients in critical condition, meanwhile, stands at 5,192.

Health Minister Fahrettin Koca pointed out that numbers of active and critical cases are dropping. He also said the country's bed, intensive care, and ventilator occupancy rates in hospitals continue to decline.

"We started to get results of following the rules together," Anadolu agency cited the minister as saying.

Turkey will be implementing a four-day curfew from 9 p.m. on Dec. 31 to 5 a.m. on Jan. 4 over the upcoming New Year's weekend as part of measures against the coronavirus.
