Turkey's opposition leader’s advisor arrested

An advisor to the leader of Turkey’s main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), Fatih Gursul, was arrested in Ankara as part of a probe into the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO).

A CHP official who spoke on condition of anonymity said that the arrest was related to the alleged use of a messaging app linked to Turkey’s July 15 coup plot, Anadolu Agency reports.

Gursul had also suspended from Istanbul University in August amid a national probe into the FETO coup attempt.

According to Istanbul’s Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, orders to arrest the academic had been issued Tuesday.

Ankara has said FETO, which is led by U.S.-based Fetullah Gulen, orchestrated the foiled coup, which left 248 people martyred and nearly 2200 injured. In the wake of the coup attempt, tens of thousands FETO suspects have been arrested, including many in the armed forces, police, justice system and education sector.
