Turkish gold trader to testify for US in sanctions-evasion trial

Turkey's gold trader whose prosecution in New York has strained relations between the U.S. and Turkey, Reza Zarrab, has pleaded guilty and will serve as a cooperating witness for the U.S. government, lawyers said.

Zarrab was supposed to be the lead defendant in the case but as the trial neared, he began cooperating with U.S. authorities and has pleaded guilty to an unspecified charge or charges, NCBC news reported.

The U.S. Justice Department alleged Zarrab to be intimately involved in a plot to use the gold trade to help Iran evade sanctions.
