Turkey should have a religious constitution, the Turkish parliament speaker Ismail Kahraman said
"As a Muslim country, why should we be in a situation where we are in retreat from religion?" the Anatolia news agency cited him as saying.
"We are a Muslim country. As a consequence, we must have a religious constitution. Secularism cannot feature in the new constitution," he stressed.
The Turkish opposition criticized the speaker’s words. CHP Deputy Group Chair Levent Gök reacted harshly to Kahraman’s comments. “The parliament speaker should resign immediately,” he said.
Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) head Devlet Bahçeli also criticized Kahraman’s statements, saying he had “made a mistake” and should “step back from it.”
