UN concerned about humanitarian crisis in Mosul

UN Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Stephen O'Brien, expressed concern over the suffering of the people who are living in the Iraqi city of Mosul, where the army is trying to drive out ISIS members.

At a UN Security Council session to discuss the situation in Iraq, the official said that around a million people remain in Mosul in areas controlled by terrorists and are also facing the military offensive launched by the Iraqi government on October 17th.

O'Brien praised the commitment expressed by Baghdad to protect civilians during their operation to expel ISIS from the city, which it overran in 2014.

According to the President of the UN Council, Swedish Ambassador, Olof Skoog, Iraq has been urged to respect international humanitarian laws and avoid harming innocent people.
