White House spokesman Josh Ernest, commenting on the statement by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the provision of Russian military assistance to the Government of Syria, said that the United States relies on the fact that the actions of Russia in Syria will be constructive and won’t lead to the strengthening of internal political conflict in the country.
He also added that Washington welcomed Moscow’s constructive contribution to fighting the group Islamic State. The United States opposes actions that can strengthen the regime of President Bashar al-Assad and lead to an escalation of the conflict.
"We hope that Russia will find a way to play a constructive role in Syria,’’ Tass cites him as saying.
Ernest reminded that these issues were discussed in recent days in a telephone conversation between US Secretary of State John Kerry and Sergey Lavrov.
