The U.S. State Department unequivocally warned that if Russia further escalates the situation with Ukraine, the Nord Stream 2 pipeline will sit unused at the bottom of the ocean.
"We continue to have strong, clear communication with our German allies," Under Secretary for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland said. "If Russia invades Ukraine, one way or another, Nord Stream 2 will not move forward."
Construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline completely ended on September 10, 2021. To start gas transport, the pipeline operator needs to receive an approval of the German regulator.
