A total of 65 people (including 15 children) were evacuated after an unidentified object exploded in an apartment in the southern Russian city of Stavropol, the city head Andrei Dzhatdoyev said.
"The public-safety answering point was informed about a blast in a residential building. Upon arrival, it turned out that it was not a household gas explosion, as was initially suggested, but a result of unlawful actions," TASS cited him as saying.
According to residents, the blast rocked an apartment on the tenth floor, shattering windows. The man, who was inside the apartment at the moment, threatened to carry out another blast. According to the mayor, the man was not a local resident and rented this apartment.
Police officers are working at the scene. Ambulances and fire engines have also been sent to the area, although no fire followed and no casualties have so far been reported. An emergency shelter was set up in a nearby school.
Later, the man, who caused the blast, was killed in a security operation and the evacuated people returned to their apartments.
