Van mayor detained in Turkey’s southeast

Turkish police detained the mayor of the southeastern Turkish city of Van, Bekir Kaya, security sources said, a day after arresting two other regional mayors in a crackdown on politicians accused of having links to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

The Democratic Regions Party (DBP) mayor of the city, Bekir Kaya, was detained early on Nov. 17 along with four other municipal officials, as the Interior Ministry also announced that it had suspended from duty the DBP mayors of Mardin and Siirt, Ahmet Türk and Tuncer Bakırhan respectively, the Hurriyet daily news reports.
