Verkhovna Rada votes to introduce martial law in Ukraine

Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada voted to back a proposal by President Petro Poroshenko to introduce martial law for a period of 30 days since November 28.

After several hours, the Rada split 272-30 in favour of the presidential edict, but only after being presented major concessions.

Poroshenko’s initial suggestion of martial law lasting 60 days was curtailed to 30 days. An original proposal to cover all of Ukraine was reduced to just ten border territories, the Independent reported.

Yesterday morning three ships of the Ukrainian Navy — Berdyansk, Nikopol and Yany Kapu — had been seized after violating the Russian state border. The Ukrainian boats did not react to legal demands of the ships accompanying them and made dangerous maneuvers, the FSB said.

The Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the incident involving Ukrainian navy ships was a very dangerous provocation on the part of Kiev.
