Vladimir Zhirinovsky: Turkey and Iran may become major powers only in alliance with Russia

Turkey and Iran may become the leading world powers only in alliance with Russia, the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party Vladimir Zhirinovsky said in an interview with Vestnik Kavkaza.

The politician pointed out that Ankara cannot rely on the West as a reliable partner. "If Turkey reinstates the death penalty, it will be gradually driven out of NATO. Then, perhaps, Moscow and Ankara will sign some military agreements and conduct joint Russian-Turkish combat exercises and naval exercises of the Black Sea and Turkey's Mediterranean fleets," the MP said.

"Turkey wanted to become a European country, to join NATO, the EU, but failed. And now President Erdogan is departing from Kemalism as the concept of the secular state. He needs an ideology, so he is bringing back Islamism. Turkey also needs an alliance with a great state. Ankara cannot tolerate the US, Europe insults and humiliates Turkey. The only country, which is loved and respected in Turkey, is Russia," the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party said.

"Yes, there is the SCO, but this organization stands somewhat apart, although Iran is actively involved in it, Turkey may enter it as well. There are the EurAsEC and the Customs Union. And now the new alliance of Russia-Turkey-Iran-Iraq-Syria is being formed. That is my prediction," Vladimir Zhirinovsky concluded.
