53 Americans taken hostage by a militant Iranian student group in 1979 will receive financial compensation, the US media report. According to the document, each former hostage will be given restitution of up to $4.4 million.
The employees of the US embassy in Iran were taken hostage in 1979 after the Islamic Revolution. There were 66 original captives in the Iranian hostage crisis, 13 were released.
The students demanded the return of the Shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, to Iran in exchange for the hostages. Iran's new authorities have put forward similar demands. 52 Americans were held for 444 days and one was released because of ill health, Interfax reports.
