European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen may replace outgoing Jens Stoltenberg. Her main competitor is the UK Secretary of Defence.

The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, may become the new Secretary General of NATO. The new head of the alliance will be appointed in October this year. The head of NATO is not an elected position. The Secretary General will be appointed on the basis of all members' consensus.

Earlier, the current head of NATO said that he would not seek another term.

The Sun notes that von der Leyen's tenure as head of the EC ends in 2024, "however, London will veto her candidacy due to her poor record at the head of the German Defence Ministry."

Moreover, von der Leyen has a mighty rival – UK Defence Minister Ben Wallace.
