Will elections in Ankara be delayed due to the terrorist attack?

The investigation into the terrorist attack on Saturday in Ankara is continuing in Turkey. Political analysts are speculating on who did this and why. The basic version of the investigation remains the involvement of the terrorist group Islamic State. Many also associate this tragic event with the parliamentary elections, which are to take place in Turkey on November 1st.

This opinion was also expressed today by Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu. "The investigation is continuing. I won’t disclose any details, but the basic version is the involvement of ISIS. We found out one name that indicates that this group is involved in this action. The terrorist attack in Ankara was an attempt to influence the results of the elections,’’ the Prime Minister said.

Recall, two explosions occurred in Turkey's capital before the beginning of the rally, which was organized by trade unions and social organizations under the slogan ‘Work, Peace, Democracy’ in order to protest at the outbreak of violence because of the Turkish-Kurdish conflict in the southeastern part of the country. Many participants of the meeting were supporters of the pro-Kurdish Democracy Party of Peoples.

Turkish political analysts, interviewed by Vestnik Kavkaza, agreed that the aim of the terrorist attack was to destabilize the current political situation in the country and influence the elections.

According to assistant professor at the School of International Relations, University of TOBB Economics and Technology (Ankara), political scientist Togrul Ismail, the terrorist attack was carried out in order to bring internal political instability to Turkey. At the same time, it was indirectly aimed against the ruling party. "Now the country's current leadership is accused of many sins, but in fact no one can be completely impervious to terror. There are big gaps in security," the analyst said.

According to him, it is difficult to predict how the current situation and emotions will affect the elections. "I think the results of voting won’t change significantly. It depends on who is behind this terror. And if the security forces will be able to clarify the perpetrators, then a lot of things will be clear and this will affect the balance of power," Togrul Ismail said.

Another Turkish expert, Kamer Kasim, is sure those forces and terrosict, who organized this terrorist attack, wanted to influence the forthcoming elections, and even to abolish them. But the political scientist has no doubts that elections will be held. "All the parties are sure that the elections should be held. So I do not think that this tragedy will have a significant impact on the elections," he said.

Turkish journalist and political scientist Nihad Dagdelen has slightly another opinion. According to him, the ruling party should be responsible for this. "If we look at the first statement after the blasts, we see that the government acusses the Kurdish party of this, trying to relieve their responsibility,’’ he said.
