The new round of inter-Syrian negotiations in Geneva is not encouraging, and this is connected with the position of the moderate opposition, which announced at the beginning of the meeting that the resignation of President Bashar al-Assad was a necessary precondition, experts said in an interview for Vestnik Kavkaza about the beginning of the next attempt at a peaceful settlement of the Syrian crisis.
Recall that the Syrian government delegation stated its readiness to start an inter-Syrian dialogue immediately if the preconditions were canceled. "We have a responsibility when we represent the Syrian people. At the same time, our responsibility is that there should be no preconditions," the head of the delegation, Syria's permanent representative to the UN, Bashar Jaafari stressed.
Thus, the adviser to the deputy chairman of the Federation Council, the Deputy Chairman of the Association of Russian Diplomats Andrey Baklanov, expressed doubt that the chances of a productive outcome of the work of diplomats has increased after the last round of negotiations.
"Even psychologically. Imagine that two delegations meet, which previously had contacts only through an intermediary, and one announces a precondition that the supreme leader of the other side should resign. Negotiations are not held in this way," he pointed out.
State Advisor of the second class, an expert of the Scientific Council of the Russian Security Council Stanislav Ivanov, said that there are small positive changes and positive prerequisites during the inter-Syrian negotiations for the continuation of negotiations.
"Of course, it is too early to speak about ultimate success, but the fact is that the negotiations will continue. According to the latest report from the UN headquarters and our Ministry of Foreign Affairs, there is still hope of involving Syrian Kurds in the negotiating process, as the inter-Syrian dialogue is not effective. They are the third force, without participating in the civil war in Syria, but over the years they have managed to create an autonomous region, and they are on the front in the fight against radical Islamists and such leading terrorist groups as Daesh and Dzhabhad al-Nusra. That is why the Kurds have deserved the right to participate in the negotiating process, in spite of Turkey's position, which denies this possibility,'' the expert said.
