Xi Jinping: China opposes double standards

China’s leadership does not accept unilateral sanctions and does not intend to follow double standards in settlement of international issues, the Chinese leader Xi Jinping said on Thursday.

"We are against unilateral sanctions and are not planning to pursue the policy aimed at the formation of blocks and confrontation escalation," he said in a video address at the ceremony of opening of the main part of the Boao Forum for Asia in the Hainan Province of China. "China will support any efforts aimed at settlement of crisis situations, we will not follow double standards," the leader added.

Beijing is adamantly opposed to "long reach jurisdiction" (exterritorial spread of national legislation) of certain countries, according to Xi Jinping. "We are against abusing unilateral sanctions <...> and will firmly protect security both in traditional and in new areas, will jointly settle global issues, including countering conflicts, terrorism and climate changes, solve issues of online and biological security," he concluded.

The Boao Forum for Asia in the eastern coast of Hainan has been held regularly since 2001, having 29 participating countries (Asian-Pacific states). It was not held in 2020 due to the pandemic, but in 2021 it was organized. The forum is called the Eastern Davos since it is a large platform for the signing of important agreements, coordinating positions between representatives of business and governmental circles of Asian countries and all other parts of the world. The Chinese authorities devote much attention to its development, considering this mechanism as an efficient instrument of soft diplomacy, which facilities the strengthening of Beijing’s international contacts.
