Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim’s convoy was fired at by an alleged gendarmerie vehicle in the Kastamonu province, when Yildirim was on his way to Ankara, from where he intended to control the emergency situation caused by the coup attempt, the Turkish Interior Minister Efkan Ala said.
"Coup attempters targeted Prime Minister’s car as well," the Hurriyet Daily News cited him as saying.
According to the reports, Yıldırım preferred to travel by land due to the risks of air travel and as the clashes in Ankara intensified his convoy took an alternative land route through Kastamonu. Yıldırım was taken to a district governor’s home, which he used as a headquarters to monitor developments throughout the night. He was hosted there until the security situation in Ankara returned to normal.
