Zelensky doubts power of NATO

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said he doubted the power of NATO because it can’t stop the military actions in his country.

"If you don't show that you are a powerful alliance, be it NATO or the European Union, <...> if you don't defend your alliances, they won't exist," he said at a news conference. "This is what is happening now."

"The power of this or that alliance lies in preventing war, in being so powerful that you can sit down at the negotiating table and say: "These are the clauses, and that’s the only way they can be," Zelensky said. "Because everyone has rights, whether a small state or a huge empire, everyone has the same rights."

He described as weak NATO's response to last year's migration crisis on the borders of Belarus with Lithuania and Ukraine.

Zelensky said separately that Russia alone shouldn’t call the shots on Ukraine’s independence, NATO and nuclear weapons.

"I really wouldn’t want any decisions regarding diplomacy, Europe, NATO, regarding the independence of Ukraine, nuclear weapons or the likelihood of nuclear shots to depend only on this team," he said in an interview with foreign news media. "But the whole world was too late, too late with respect to Ukraine.".
