Russia marks Tatyana’s Day

Russian students are marking Tatyana’s Day today. The day is marked on January 25, the date Moscow State University (MSU) was founded.

Ismail Agakishiyev, head of the Center for Caucasus Studies of MSU, said that the university had graduated many specialists, world scientists and holders of the Nobel Prize.
President Dmitry Medvedev visited the university.
About 3,000 students of Moscow higher educational centers are expected to attend the skating arena on Red Square.
Yefim Pivovar, head of the Russian State University for the Humanities, and Patriarch Kirill congratulated the students. MSU head Victor Sadovnichy presented the university’s Church of St. Tatyana with two million rubles.


Sergey Karpov, Dean of the History Department of MSU, congratulated the students. He reminded them that they had celebrated the 300th anniversary of Mikhail Vasiliyevich Lomonosov. A delegation visited Lomonosov’s and Ivan Shuvalov’s graves in Saint-Petersburg.
Karpov noted that 2012 is the Year of Russian History. Special attention will be paid to historic events from the foundation of Old Russia to the modern state. An international conference will be hosted by the Academy of Sciences and the RSUH. Student contests will be held, the victory over Napoleon in the Patriotic War of 1812, the end of the Time of Troubles of 1612, Peter Stolypin’s reforms and the 70th anniversary of Stalingrad will be marked. The MSU plans to open a website with a forum for students.

Special visits will be organized on May 9. Karpov reminded the students about visits to Baku and meetings with Azerbaijani veterans. MSU will host the traditional concert of International Student Artists “Tatyana’s Day”, the ceremony of awarding the best students and the star of the university. The 257th anniversary of the MSU will be marked.
