Makhachkala will host the 5th International Festival of Folklore and Traditional Culture “Gortsy”, RIA Dagestan reports.
Attendants will arrive from Azerbaijan, India, Iran, Latvia, Slovakia, Thailand, Turkey and Russian regions (Astrakhan Region, republics of the North Caucasus, Saratov Region).
A festival and a concert will mark the 75th anniversary of people’s art at the Russian Drama Theater on June 6. A festival of national costume poetry will be held on June 7.
A conference on dialogue of cultures and preservation of national cultures will be held at the National Library on June 8. Derbent will host the Ashug festival on June 10 with performances of groups of the levashinsky District, Makhachkala, Izberbash, Kaspiysk and Derbent.
The Gortsy Festival is held under the auspices of UNESCO this year. It is part of the UNESCO heritage. The festival was first held in 2004. It was launched by culture ministries of Russia and Dagestan, Russian Commission for UNESCO, State Center for People’s Art, supported by the Dagestani leader and UNESCO.
The festival is held for 7 days in June-July. India, Mexico, Slovakia, Croatia, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Moscow regions attend it.
Gortsy demonstrates rich ethnic cultural heritage. It has over 100 folk groups. Hans Holtz, Secretary General of the International Folklore Organization arrived from Austria for the festival in February 2010.
