In Shamakhi, in the Gulustan fortress that was once one of the main residences of the Shirvanshahs, the ruins of ancient palace baths have been discovered, Trend reports with reference to the site of the National Academy of Sciences (ANAS).

Employees of the Shamakhi-Agsu expedition of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography discovered the remains of water pipelines providing the fortress with water.

Archaeologists have found a lot of copper and silver coins minted in Shamakhi, Gulustan, Gabala, Shabran, Ganja and Tabriz, as well as pottery and jewelry made not only in Azerbaijan but also in China, Central Asia, Iran and Europe.

In accordance with the cooperation agreement between the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography and the Turkish Mustafa Kemal University, Professor Aynur Ozfirat and Assistant Professor Shevket Donmez became acquainted with the research work in the fortress of Gulustan and agreed on future joint research.

The excavations in the fortress of Gulustan began in 2011. As a result, archaeologists have found a large number of samples of material culture, ruins of various buildings, tools, weapons, pottery, copper and silver coins of the IV-XV centuries, as well as jewelry.
