Armenian singer Sonya Shahgeldyan won first prize in the ‘New wave’ international contest for new singing talent that took place in the Latvian town of Jurmala, RIA Novosti reports.
Shahgeldyan beat her Ukrainian rival by one point. An Estonian performer got the bronze. The Russian contender took seventh position and was also awarded the audience sympathy prize.
The ‘New Wave’ contest for young performers of popular music was founded by Russian composer Igor Krutoy and Latvian pianist and composer Raimonds Pauls in 2002 to give a chance to new singers and performers.
