Russian Ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov met delegates of the conference ‘The Caucasian War of the 19th century: Realpolitik and ‘memory wars’’ to exchange opinions about Russian-Turkish relations. The talks were attended by Alexey Vlasov, Executive Director of the North-South Center for Political Analysis and Editor-in-Chief of Vestnik Kavkaza, and Ismail Agakishiyev, a docent of the History Faculty of the MSU named after M.V. Lomonosov and Vice President of the Consulting-Analysis- PR Union of Companies.
Agakishiyev said that the problem of the Caucasian War was not studied well in the USSR and Russia. He noted that there were assumptions that the Russian Empire had been exterminating peoples of the Caucasus. The expert reminded that young Caucasians were studying in universities in Moscow, Saint Petersburg and other cities, forming intellectuals of Caucasus peoples and Central Asia. Thus, their assumptions and facts contradict each other. Moreover, the Georgian Military Road was build to connect Caucasian cities.
Agakishiyev added that there was need for a science center to consolidate scientists and scholars studying the problems. He called for restoration of the events of war in history books. The expert concluded that the attendants of the conference had decided to organize more round-table conference for problems of history of the Caucasus.
