The History Faculty of the Moscow State University of M.V. Lomonosov is holding the 5th science readings to mark the 90th anniversary of the birth of academician Ivan Kovalchenko. Yefim Pivovar, Rector of the Russian State University for the Humanities, said that he had studied under Kovalchenko’s supervision for years. The rector recalled that the scientist had been the Editor-in-Chief of the USSR History magazine and he himself was heading one of the sections of the magazine.
Pivovar said that he had made reports, read special lectures, worked on doctorate with the help of Kovalchenko. The academician was focused on history of the 19th century, history of peasants, he had been a historiographer, discoverer of ‘mass sources’, user of mathematic methods in history, founder of one of popular modern movements.
The rector noted that Kovalchenko had been one of the brightest editors of the National History magazine where he had created many new trends, sections, as well as invited many new Russian and foreign authors. He recalled that Kovalchenko had been a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences and the section of history sciences.
Togrul Ismail, a docent of the Faculty of International Relations of TOBB (Ankara), a former student of the History Faculty and the Subdepartment for History Studies and Historiography, said that the subdepartment had been chosen because it had been headed by Kovalchenko. It needed skills in Maths, philosophy, methodology.
Alexey Vlasov, Editor-in-Chief of Vestnik Kavkaza, noted that Kovalchenko had been a major teacher, wise, calm and positive towards students. Vlasov recalled that Kovalchenko had been his academic advisor and helped him become a junior scientist of the subdepartment at the age of 23.
