At the opening of the exhibition "Moscow-Sochi. Moscow Archaeologists at
the Olympics", the head of Mosgornaslediye, Alexander Kibovsky, said that about
900 historical artifacts were found during archaeological excavations in
the construction of Olympic facilities and the resort "Rosa Khutor" in
Sochi.
" It is the first time that we have received such material from the
mountains. 8 known and 10 new objects were researched," RIA Novosti
quoted Kibovsky.
In turn, the General Director of the Moscow Archaeological Office, Konstantin
Voronin, said that the expedition was conducted during 2010-2011, and then
the collection was studied. The earliest find, according to him, can be
dated to the period from 70 to 100 thousand years ago.
In the northeastern part of the lower site of the archaeological complex "Selyshche Rosa 1",
as noted in the materials for the exhibition, an historic trail was
discovered - a passage through a blockage of large rocks
of glacial origin. It passed a stone slab that resembled a wolf. Also found on
the site were a bronze cauldron and a bowl - important objects of the
religious practices of the Caucasian peoples.
The cost of archaeological excavations and research amounted to about 45
million rubles, Voronin said.
