Muslims are marking Nowruz. It has been marked for about 3700-5000 years. Babylon marked it on the 21st of March or April for 12 days. The earliest record of Nowruz dates back to 505 BC. Ferdowsi, Rudakim Avicenna, Nizami, Saadi and Hafizi proved that it had been marked long before Islam. Nizami’s Siyasetname and Omar Khayyam’s Noqruzname were dedicated to Nowruz.
The Soviet government was opposed to the celebrations of Nowruz. Permission to celebrate it was given in 1967 with the help of Shikhali Gurbanov, a member of the Central Committee of the Azerbaijani Communist Party.
According to tradition, people celebrate the first day of Nowruz at home. The light should be on throughout the night, as turning it off is a sign of bad luck.
