In the historic center of Vladikavkaz, at the beginning of the old avenue at the intersection of Miller and Kirov Streets, a monument to the poet, novelist and dramatist Alexander Pushkin has been unveiled. The author of the bronze sculpture is the famous Ossetian sculptor Vladimir Soskiev, who donated the monument to the city.
The head of the Municipal Education Department of Vladikavkaz, Bela Ikoeva, said at the ceremony that Vladikavkaz always been the cultural center of the North Caucasus.
"The atmosphere created by the citizens of Vladikavkaz has always attracted visitors: theater lovers, artistic and cultural figures, and royal personages. Our beloved Alexander Pushkin also did not overlook our city. Vladikavkaz is a city of parks, boulevards and squares. It's wonderful when our city is filled with such islands of culture," says Bela Ikoeva, according to YuGA.
Russian theater actor Vyacheslav Vershinin told about the two days in May which Pushkin spent Vladikavkaz and about his meeting with the commander of the Vladikavkaz fortress, General Skvortsov, and also recited the poem "To a Kalmyk Woman." The guests saw a fragment of Pushkin's meeting with General Skvortsov as performed by actors of the Russian Theater, and later an artist, made up as Pushkin, recited the poem "I Remember a Wonderful Moment".
This is the second monument to Pushkin in Vladikavkaz. The first one is located on Pushkin Square, where in 1830 the hotel where the poet stayed was located.
