The Suez Canal, one of the world's main transport arteries, is
operating in a normal mode, despite disorder in Egypt, the canal's
administration said, RIA Novosti reports, citing Egyptian media.
Mass protests started in Egypt on January 25. The protesters demand
economic and political reforms and dismissal of President Hosni
Mubarak, who has been in power for 30 years. Al Jazeera reported that
over 100 people died. Marauders robbed shops, destroyed most police
stations, stole weapons, released thousands of criminals. The largest
trading centers were robbed. 450 marauders were arrested this night.
Almost all districts of the country had self-formed defense
committees, consisting of young men, mainly youth, armed with clubs,
protecting their relatives.
45-50 vessels pass the canal daily.
The Suez Canal connects the Mediterranean and the Red Seas. It is one
of the main income sources for Egypt. The canal is worth approximately
$5 billion annually.
