Armenia registers African swine flu outbreak

Armenia has registered an outbreak of the African swine flu in the
Sunik Region, Gevork Tovmasyan, deputy head of the State Veterinary
and Food Security Inspection of the Agriculture Ministry, told ARKA.


The official said that there is no treatment for the disease. Export
of pork from the region will be limited.


Armenia saw over 100 pigs culled in 2010. 200 died. The first outbreak
of the disease was registered in Tavush and Lori Provinces on August
7, 2007.


The African swine flu, or Montgomery disease, was first registered in
South Africa in 1903. Wild and domestic pigs are sensitive to the
infection. The flu spreads via physical contact, food, pastures,
transport. The virus is not a threat to people.
