Gennady Onishenko, head of the Federal Service for Oversight of Consumer Protection and Welfare, said that Georgian wine may enter the Russian market, Interfax reports.
The ban for Georgian wine in Russia was introduced in 2006 when ties between Moscow and Tbilisi started to break. Onishenko said that the wine needs to undergo testing.
Concerning lifting the ban, he recalled Tbilisi’s refusal to have Russia in the WTO.
Wine and mineral water import from Tbilisi, as well as air connection with Moscow, were banned in 2006. The conflict resulted in a war in August 2008 over South Ossetia’s breakaway from Georgia.
