Turkey does not intend to abandon the project of building the first nuclear power plant with the help of Russia Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said today before his departure to Moscow, RIA Novosti reports.
Turkey is planning to build its first nuclear power plant in the Mediterranean province of Mersin, with the participation of Russia. The total project cost is estimated at $20 billion. The second nuclear power plant will be built in the Black Sea province of Sinop.
Several Turkish environmental and public organizations called on the local authorities to abandon the plans to construct a nuclear power plant in Mersin in connection with events in Japan. The plant is planned to be built near the line of a tectonic fault, where a strong earthquake might occur.
