Russia limits fish imports from Japan

The Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance has temporarily limited imports of fish and fish products from 242 Japanese fish processing enterprises, RIA Novosti reports.

The decision was made due to the radiation threat from the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant. The federal service denied radioactivity of fish products earlier, the head of its PR service Alexander Savaliev said.

75% of Russian fish and sea products come from the Far East. 10% of fish imports come from Japan. Russia mainly imports exotic fish from Japan, such as eels, a member of the federal agency’s public council Timur Mitupov said. Norway is the second largest fish exporter to Russia.

Restaurants all over the world stopped purchasing Japanese fish after the accident at Fukushima-1.
