Iran will increase uranium enrichment rate to 20% to build four or five more nuclear reactors, Reuters cites the head of the Iranian Nuclear Energy Organization Fereydoon Abbasi as saying.
Abbasi said that they are research reactors for the production of medical isotopes.
Six mediators and the IAEA have been trying to persuade Iran to halt uranium enrichment as a threat to nuclear non-proliferation since 2003. The negotiations were stopped in 2009 when IAEA condemned Iran for constructing the second uranium enrichment facility and urged Iran to confirm that no more such facilities will be constructed.
The USA and other Western states accuse Iran of developing nuclear arms under the guise of peaceful energy. Tehran denies the accusations and insists that the nuclear program is aimed at fulfilling demands for electricity.
The UN SC passed a resolution in June 2010, introducing sanctions against Iran. It is the fourth resolution of the UN SC due to Tehran“s refusal to fulfill international demands and clarify a set of nuclear issues, including its military aspect.
