EU opens market to Palestine

European Commissioner for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton and Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad have signed a deal in Brussels today, opening the EU market to Palestinian products, RIA Novosti cites the press-service of the European Commission.

Palestine was formerly only able to trade with the EU through Israel.

The deal allows customs-free sales of agricultural and fishing products from the West Bank and Gaza Strip for 10 years. The document may be prolonged.

Only Palestinian fruit and vegetables will have customs fees if the EU requirements for import prices are not fulfilled.

Trade turnover between the EU and the Palestinian Authority reached 56.6 million euros in 2009. 50.5 million euros of the sum were European imports.
