Arsalan Kasemi, the head of the Iranian National Fishing Association, said that Iran plans to restore reserves of sturgeon in the Caspian Sea and at the science institute of Shakhid Dadman, IRNA reports.
Kasemi pointed out that Iran does not pollute the sea as much as other states. Iran has a monopoly on sturgeon fishing and incurs major expenditure in preserving fish reserves.
The Caspian states signed deals banning the fishing of sturgeon in the sea for two years. Caviar was not exported during that period.
Arsalan Kasemi noted that sturgeon stocks fell due to uncontrolled fishing. Another reason is comb-beares spreading in the sea, resulting in a reduction of sprats, the sturgeon's principle nutrient.
