Baku hosts UNESCO International Committee for Bioethics

Baku is hosting the 18th session of the UNESCO International Committee
for Bioethics. The three-day session was organized by the Azerbaijani
National Commission for UNESCO and the Azerbaijani National Academy of
Sciences, Trend reports.


Mehriban Aliyev, First Lady of Azerbaijan, the Goodwill Ambassador of
UNESCO and ISESCO, Parliament Member, head of the Heydar Aliyev Fund,
said that the world needs to strive for progress in realizing
achievements of bioethics. People need to think about the use of
genetic engineering and nuclear medicine in the world of
globalization.


Many citizens have no opportunities for genetic engineering and
nuclear medicine. A lot of children all around the world die at the
age under 5. There is need for progress in the sphere and fulfillment
of human rights, she said.


Aliyeva believes that the 18th session of the UNESCO International
Committee for Bioethics will allow scientists to make a large step
forward.


UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova expressed hope for success in all
spheres at the session.


President of the National Academy of Sciences Mahmoud Kerimov said
that Azerbaijan pays special attention to teaching and development of
bioethics. The academy has a section for bioethics. There are centers
for doctoral training and thesis works on bioethics.


The academy's president noted that Mehriban Aliyeva played an
important role in development of bioethics.
