Representatives of Russia and Armenia have adopted a protocol
confirming their interest in the construction of a new nuclear power
plant in Armenia, after the thirteenth meeting of the
Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation, the press
service of the Ministry of Energy reported on Monday.
The meeting was held on 8 July in Rostov-on-Don, RIA Novosti reports.
The Russian side was represented by the Minister of Transport, Igor
Levitin, the Armenian commission was chaired by the Armenian Prime
Minister, Tigran Sargsyan. The meeting was attended by representatives
of ministries, departments and organizations of Russia and Armenia.
The Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Armenia, Armen
Movsisyan, said in June that the tragic events at Japan's Fukushima
nuclear power plant cannot hinder the construction of a new power unit
at the Armenian nuclear power plant. The country has no alternative,
and the construction of coal-or gas-fired plants will strongly
increase in the cost of electricity, he said.
