The Armenian government has decided to change the trade name of brandy to Arbun (from the Armenian verb “kharbel” – “to become drunk”),
Armenian Minister of Agriculture Samvel Galstyan said, RIA Novosti
reports.
There were 10 terms proposed, including Arkon, Barkon, Armenak,
Ginayr, Arben, Arbeni, Gineak and others. The term was approved by a
ministerial committee, the State language inspectorate, social
organizations and interested agencies, Galstyan said at the government
session.
He said that the decision was made due to the necessity to distinguish
Armenian brandy made from local materials and local products made
using imported grape spirit (40% volume).
Galstyan noted that they will use grape spirit produced on the
territory of Armenia for Arbun. Armenian cognac’s name will remain in
place.
Premier Tigran Sargsyan noted that it is necessary to get used to the
new term, however unusual it may seem at first.
“There will be people that will not like the name at first, however in
1993, when we opened a competition for the name of the national
currency, there were many proposals and we chose ‘dram’. We got used
to it and no one thinks that there could have been a different
variant”, Sargsyan said, adding that in 10 years people will get used
to the name Arbun.
