Azerbaijan wants Armenian nuclear power plant to close

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is holding the 55th General Conference in Vienne on September 19-23, 2011. President of the Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences Mahmoud Kerimov is attending the conference.

Kerimov spoke out against the Armenian nuclear power plant in Metsamor as a threat to the region. International monitors have inspected the place several times but have not presented any reports to bordering states.

Turkey, Azerbaijan and Georgia offered joint monitoring with international experts to determine the security level. Armenia and international structures did not approve the initiative.

The Armenian nuclear power plant is located near Metsamor City, about 20-30 km south of Yerevan. It was launched in 1976 and only two blocks there are operational. Their total output is 407.5 MW.

Armenian officials insist that adjustments to the reactor in the last 15 years improve security. However, the power plant is old and is one of the most dangerous ones in the list of the IAEA.
