Iran has confirmed that Gazprom Neft will not be involved in developing the country’s largest oil field, Azar, located on the border with Iraq. As a reason, Iran pointed to the dragging out of the implementation terms of the project, RBC reports.
The head of the National Iranian Oil Company, Ahmad Kalebani, reminded that Gazprom Neft had failed to fulfil its obligations on time, despite several warnings.
Iranian media reported in late August 2011 that Tehran stopped cooperation with Gazprom Neft in developing Azar. The Iranian ambassador to Russia, Mahmoud Reza Sajadi, warned about unfulfilled agreements.
Russian Energy Minister Sergey Shmatko said on his visit to Bushehr on September 12, 2011, that the sides were to determine prospects for development of the Azar field within a month.
The Azar field is located at the Anaran Block. It was discovered in mid-2005. It contains about 2 billion barrels of oil reserves.
