Two Russian shipbuilding companies, the United Shipbuilding Corporation and the Zelenodolsky Factory named after A.M. Gorky, want to start business in Iran despite international sanctions, Kommersant reports.
The companies will build transport and mining vessels for the Caspian oil and gas fields. They will provide all the necessary equipment.
International sanctions against Iran have political risks and may ruin the deal on Russian purchase of France’s Mistral helicopters.
The US government introduced trade limitations in 1979. They were made more harsh several times. The sanctions include a ban for US citizens and companies to have business in Iran, establish joint ventures. The US government also punishes third states for violating the embargo. The EU implied own sanctions against Iran, aimed against its oil and gas facilities. Russia joined them later as well.
Oleg Deripaska’s Rusal Company expressed willingness to operate in Iran despite sanctions earlier.
