Georgia and Russia have chances of success in signing the final WTO agreement on November 10. A Georgian delegation is on its way to Switzerland to pass the final document on Russia joining the organization. Vestnik Kavkaza reported earlier that Russian officials had approved the Swiss proposals on freighting control by Georgia and Russia on the borders of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
Maksim Medvedkov, head of the Russian delegation and director of the department for trade negotiations of the Russian Ministry for Economic Development, said the sides had reached an agreement but Russia maintains its principle positions.
An independent company will realize audit on trade on the borders of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The company will support Russian and Georgian customs services.
Sergey Mikheyev, Director General of the Center for Political Conjuncture, said in an interview with Vestnik Kavkaza that such statements demonstrate real agreements reached by the sides. “President Medvedev wants to conclude his terms of presidency with Russia joining the WTO. It is essential for him, I believe, he will insist on it,” the expert notes.
