Uzbekistan continues draining power from Kazakh energy system

Uzbekistan continues draining electricity and power from the unified energy system of Kazakhstan, Tengrinews.kz reports.

The Uzbek energy system has received 100 million KW hours in the last decade, with shortfalls of 600 MW.

Bakhytzhan Jaksaliyev, Kazakh Vice-Minister for Industry and New Technologies, said that Uzbek officials had assured him about taking measures to prevent uncontracted power drainage from the unified energy system of Kazakhstan. But no practical results have been achieved so far. Average daily shortfalls reach 6-10 million KW hours.

Kazakh energy specialists are having negotiations in Tashkent.

Uzbekistan has been draining power since October 2011. Unbalanced operation of Uzbek energy system causes overloads on the North-South power line of transit. This causes power cuts in Kazakhstan and need to increase electricity production at power plans and purchase additional electricity in Russia.

Vestnik Kavkaza reported earlier that Uzbekistan had agreed to pay Kazakhstan $15 million for power drainage.
