Kazakhstan may face even worse ecological repercussions than the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, yet Kazakh ecological services are unprepared for the risk, Ecology Minister Nurlan Kapparov said, Trend reports.
At a public council for combating corruption of the ruling Nur Otan party, the minister reminded about the launch of oil extraction at Kashagan in 2013. He believes that a system needs to be formed for reacting to oil spills.
Kapparov said that the issue had been discussed in 2011 on numerous occasions. 30 artificial islands will be operating in 2013.
A BP platform called Deepwater Horizon sunk in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010. Its explosion killed 11 people and an oil spill of about 5 million barrels. The spill was stopped on July 15, the borehole causing the spill was sealed off on August 4, 2010. Damage caused by the incident totaled about $2 billion.
