US allocates $76 million for development of Georgia's energy infrastructure

The United States government has provided a grant worth approximately
125 million laris ($76 million) for the development of energy
infrastructure in Georgia, Business Georgia reports.

Representatives of the US Agency for International Development
(USAID) held a meeting today, where they informed the public that part
of the grant will be used for the rehabilitation of the "Senaki 1" and "Senaki 2" transmission lines, owned by the state electric company in
Georgia (GEG).

According to the head of the GEG, Sulkhan Zumburidze, the project will
rehabilitate the transmission lines and the associated "Mendzhi" and "Tskaltubo"  substations.

In February 2010 the US and Georgia signed the "Technical Assistance
Agreement", which provided the "Development of Energy Infrastructure"
program.
