Russia and Turkmenistan to cooperate in trade and training of sailors

Russian Vice Premier Arkady Dvorkovich, Turkmen Vice Premier and Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov have co-chaired the Russian-Turkmen commission for economic cooperation. They discussed fuel and energy, transport, industry, agriculture, finances, humanitarian and regional cooperation. The session was concluded with the signing of a deal on naval trading by the Russian Naval Registry and the State Sea and River Transport Service of Turkmenistan, RBC reports.

They also signed a deal on cooperation of the Russian State Naval Academy of Admiral S.O. Makarov and the State Sea and River transport Service of Turkmenistan to train specialists for cargo transportation and industrial management.

The State Naval Academy of Admiral S.O. Makarov was founded on May 7, 1876. It is a member of the International Naval Training Forum. Its programs were approved in Russia, Panama, the Marshal Islands, Liberia, Norway and the Nautical Institute (UK).

Participants in the session signed a protocol. The next session will be held in Turkmenistan in the second half of 2013.

Russia was the 3rd-biggest trading partner of Turkmenistan in the first quarter of 2012, with a trade turnover of $1.23541 billion. Gazprom (Russia) signed a deal on purchases of Turkmen gas through Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan in 2003 for 25 years via Central Asia – the Center Pipeline. Russia reduced the purchases to 10 billion cubic meters in 2010, dropping to only 25%, compared with 2008.

Russia’s ITERA and Zarubezhneft are operating at a Turkmen block in the Caspian Sea.

Russia has about 180 joint enterprises in Turkmenistan, including Siloviye Mashiny, Vozrozhdeniye, constructing industrial and social facilities, roads and communications.
