The Turkmenbashi Airport on the Turkmen coast of the Caspian Sea has doubled traffic of foreign jets. President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov ordered jets to be fueled at lower prices in early 2012. Income from fueling them increased 6.5-fold.
The new runway is 3500 meters long and 60 meters wide and may serve planes of any types. SIEMENS and Thales provided equipment for the airport.
The airport is planned to be used for Akhabad-Moscow, Ashkhabad-Astrakhan, Ashkhabad-Istanbul and other flights.
The Turkmenbashi Airport was built in 2010 for €125 million by Polimex. It has a capacity of six jets and 800 passengers an hour. Its port will serve jets with a takeoff weight of 400 tons.
It was built for tourists visiting the Avaz resort zone. A simplified visa regime is planned to be implemented for foreigners. CIS citizens will still need visas.
