28 power plants will be privatized in Iran by the end of the year, making a total of 46 private-owned power plants, as stated by Deputy Minister for Energy Mohammad Bekhzad.
The country produces 40% of energy it consumes. The figure is planned to reach 60% next year.
Energy Minister Majid Namjou said that the Constitution allows individuals to own power plants, but electric infrastructure remains under state control.
Iran started realization of 12 new energy projects and invested over $1.4 billion in them. Output of electricity will increase to 2000MW a year.
Iran plans to increase production of electricity by 25GW to 73GW by March 2016.
