Europe may block South Stream project

 

South Stream will be unable to operate in the European Union, unless its owner Gazprom (Russia), obeys European energy laws, the European Commission said, Reuters reports.Gazprom started construction of the South Stream section in Serbia in November. Alexander Medved, Deputy Head of the concern, said in Brussels that the company had found buyers for 63 billion cubic meters of gas a year.Klaus-Dieter Borchardt of the Energy Department of the European Commission said that the South Stream project will not operate in the EU if it violates the law. European energy specialists suspected that Gazprom is a monopolist in Central and Eastern Europe. European Commissioner for Competition Joaquin Almunia said yesterday that Gazprom may make concessions.Borchardt said that the law did not forbid Gazprom to build the pipeline to deliver gas to Europe bypassing Ukraine.
